Book Physical Therapy Without a Referral in Chicago

Illinois is a direct access state, so most patients can schedule an evaluation at Free Body Physical Therapy without seeing a doctor first. No prescription, no waiting on paperwork.

This page covers where to book, what happens at your first visit, and how quickly you can get in. Call (773) 599-3393 or book online below.

The Short Version

Since 2018, Illinois law has allowed a licensed physical therapist to evaluate and treat you without a physician’s referral. You can call us today and be seen this week.

There are a few safeguards built into the law, and we follow all of them. If you want the detail on the notification requirement, the progress rules, and how insurance carriers handle direct access, we have written that up in full: what Illinois direct access means for patients. Short answer for most people: you are covered, and our front desk will verify your benefits before your first visit.

What Happens at Your First Visit

Your evaluation is a full 45 minutes with your physical therapist, not a rushed intake followed by exercises with an aide. They take your history, watch how you move, test strength and range, and begin hands-on treatment when it makes sense that day.

You leave with a working diagnosis and a plan. Bring your insurance card, a photo ID, and clothing you can move in. If you have had imaging or a surgical report for the problem, bring that as well.

You will see the same therapist at every visit. The person who evaluated you is the one best placed to judge whether the plan is working, so continuity is built into how we schedule.

What You Can Book Without a Referral

Direct access applies across everything we treat, at both our Division Street and Belmont Avenue clinics.

Our Division Street clinic serves Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village, and Humboldt Park, and our Belmont Avenue clinic serves Belmont Cragin, Portage Park, and Northwest Chicago. Both run on the same scheduling system, and every visit is a full 45 minutes one on one with your physical therapist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral for physical therapy in Illinois?

In most cases, no. Illinois has allowed direct access since August 16, 2018, which means a physical therapist can evaluate and treat you without a referral. Your insurance plan is a separate question, and some plans still require one for coverage.

Will you tell my doctor I’m getting physical therapy?

Yes, and the law requires it. If you start without a referral, we notify your treating health care professional within five business days of your first visit. If you don’t have one, we’ll talk through that with you at your evaluation.

What if physical therapy isn’t helping?

If you aren’t showing measurable or functional improvement after 10 visits or 15 business days, whichever comes first, we refer you to a health care professional for further evaluation. We’d rather send you to the right provider than keep treating something that isn’t responding.

Does Medicare allow direct access?

Medicare has specific requirements for physician involvement in your care. Call us at (773) 599-3393 before you book and we’ll walk you through what your visits need in order to be covered.

How do I find out if my plan covers it?

Call us and our front desk will verify your benefits before your first visit. It takes a few minutes and it means no surprise bills later.
