Neck and Back Pain Treatment in Chicago

Neck and back pain has a way of shrinking your life. Lifting a laundry basket, turning to check a blind spot, sitting through a long meeting — the things you never used to think about become the things you plan around. At Free Body Physical Therapy, we treat what is driving the pain rather than chasing the symptom, in full 45-minute sessions one-on-one with your physical therapist. We treat neck and back pain at both of our Chicago clinics: Division Street in Wicker Park and our Belmont Avenue location in Belmont Cragin.

What Causes Neck and Back Pain?

Your spine carries load, absorbs shock, and moves in every direction, so pain there can begin in a joint, a disc, a nerve, or the muscles that stabilize all three. Back pain is one of the most common medical problems in the United States, and the majority of cases are mechanical, which means they tend to respond well to movement-based care rather than rest alone.

Why Finding the Cause Changes the Treatment

Two people can describe the same aching lower back and need completely different care. Treatment for an irritated nerve looks nothing like treatment for a strained muscle in the neck, and a disc problem responds to different loading than a stiff joint does. Sorting out which structure is generating your symptoms is the first job of your evaluation, and it is the reason two patients with identical pain descriptions leave with different plans.

What We Treat

Neck and back pain rarely arrives on its own, and the injury behind it shapes the plan. If your symptoms started with training, our sports rehabilitation program addresses the movement patterns underneath the pain as well as the pain itself, and dry needling is available in the same visit when a trigger point is part of the picture.

Chronic neck & back pain
Muscle strains & tears
Herniated discs
Spinal stenosis
Degenerative disc disease
Scoliosis-related pain & stiffness
Car accident-related pain
Sports injuries & overuse strains
Pre- and post-operative care

Some symptoms need a physician’s evaluation before physical therapy begins. Sudden weakness in an arm or a leg, numbness through the groin or inner thighs, loss of bladder or bowel control, or back pain alongside unexplained fever or weight loss should go to your doctor right away. Your therapist screens for all of these at your first visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral for physical therapy in Illinois?

Most patients do not. Illinois is a direct access state, so patients with commercial insurance and cash-pay patients can schedule an evaluation directly. Medicare has specific physician-involvement requirements. If you have Medicare, call us first, and we will walk you through what is needed.

How long will physical therapy for back pain take?

It depends on what is causing the pain, how long you have had it, and what you need to get back to. Your therapist will give you a realistic timeline at your evaluation and will revisit it as your symptoms change. You will not be committed to a fixed number of visits up front.

Can physical therapy help me avoid injections or surgery?

For many patients, restoring movement and strength reduces reliance on imaging, injections, and surgical consultation. That depends entirely on the diagnosis, and it is a decision you make with your physician rather than one that physical therapy makes for you.

Can physical therapy help neck and back pain after a car accident?

Yes. Whiplash and other post-collision injuries are among the most common reasons patients come to us for neck pain. Bring any imaging or physician notes to your first visit so your therapist can build around what has already been ruled out.
